I can't believe summer is winding down already. We're about six weeks away from our average first frost date, but since summer was so cool I wouldn't be surprised if it happened earlier this year. Although you wouldn't know we've had such a cool summer with the 90+ temps the past couple weeks! #crazyweather
Anyway, our garden is doing well. The tomatoes are still producing, but have slowed down a lot. Above is a picture of one of our peas. As you can see they are starting to bloom.
Our butternut squash has really taken off over the past couple weeks! We have tons on the vines and I'm crossing my fingers that they will continue to do well until harvest. I sprayed the leaves with one part milk and nine parts water as it is supposed to keep the powdery mildew under control. Has anyone had success with this method?? Also I've killed a few squash bugs the past few days, but they were on the strawberries and tomatoes not the squash! I don't have a lot of experience growing squash so I'm just learning what the common pests/diseases are and how to deal with them. Any tips would be appreciated!
Our strawberries have grown quite a but this year too. Maybe we'll finally get a good amount of fruit next year! I'm also hoping for a good blueberry crop from our 4 bushes. Our raspberries aren't doing that great.
We also have an Arkansas Black apple tree and sadly the large limb that is loaded with fruit is broken and will probably have to be removed after harvest. #breaksmyheart In the meantime I'm looking forward to the harvest next month. Arkansas Black isn't ready until the end of October so I still have to wait a bit, but I'm so ready to make applesauce, apple leather, apple butter, apple pie filling, dehydrated apples and so on!!!
On a random side note, my parents recently got Walker a chainsaw and he is obsessed! He had been using sticks to pretend to chainsaw and now he has a real one just like daddy!
I am so looking forward to all of the delicious fall harvests over the next couple months and I can't wait to share more gardening tips and recipes with y'all!! In the meantime you can check out my fall and gardening boards on Pinterest for tons of inspiration!
What are you excited to grow/eat this fall??

Your squash looks amazing! I have not heard of the milk and water method- will have to try that because we have powdery mildew pretty bad. I can't wait for fall!!
ReplyDeleteI think your supposed to apply it once a week. I'm going to try and see how it does because so far the mildew isn't too bad, but it seems to be spreading.
