I just finished reading Modern Pioneering: More than 150 Recipes, Projects, and Skills for a Self-Sufficient Life by Georgia Pellegrini. This was a quick read chocked full of beautiful photographs and useful information.
Georgia introduces herself by saying, "because of my Great-Aunt Gray, I have always liked to get dirt under my fingernails. Because of my Grandma Pelligrini, those fingernails have always been well-manicured."
I don't know about you, but she sounds like someone I can relate too.
The book covers gardening, preserving food, foraging, and basic survival skills. Some of my favorite projects included in the book are:
Carrot Butter (pg. 54)
Spicy Red Pepper Hummus (pg. 62)
Rosemary Syrup (pg. 75)
Lemon Basil Ice Cream (pg. 80)
How to Make a Flower Press (pg. 88-89)
Pickled Peppers, Carrots, and Onions (pg. 149)
Preserved Meyer Lemons (pg. 154)
Kimchi (pg. 190)
Homemade Vanilla Extract (pg. 210)
How to Create a 48-Hour Survival Kit ( pg. 226)
Chamomile Hair Lightener (pg. 252)
How to Make a Wreath from Vines (pg.285)
If you're at all interested in modern day pioneering then I would recommend this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I can't wait to try many of the recipes/projects for myself!

I received this book for free from Blogging for Books for this review.
This sounds right up my alley! I recently read (well listened too) the book The Dirty Life. It was all about a couple who moved and created a Homestead and CSA. Her descriptions of their struggles, triumphs and food was wonderful. I love these types of books!
ReplyDeleteOh and lemon basil ice cream sounds delicious!
