I've been spending some time lately thinking about our upcoming garden. I'm trying to keep things simple since we'll have a newborn right when things are getting started, but we aren't downsizing or anything. Besides, being able to get out and work my hands in the dirt is very therapeutic and I can't imagine not having that option!
I ordered my seeds this morning from Baker Creek Heirlooms Seeds (my favorite seed company!). I didn't order very many because I still have lots left over from years past including like 15 different tomato varieties! I keep my seeds in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator and I've never had problems with them keeping for several years.
I also ordered my seed potatoes and onion sets from Gurney's. I'm planning on planting more this year and also doing a second planting mid summer for a fall harvest.
I'm saving some of potatoes from last year, but they are pretty shriveled and I have to keep breaking off eyes from them. We'll see how they do.
Anyway, I also ordered 2 blueberry bushes and 4 raspberry plants which I'm thrilled about! I've wanted to plant fruit ever since we moved here four years ago, but didn't know how long we would be staying. Anyway, I've kicked myself every year for not planting fruit right away!
I'm excited to try growing some new things this year, such as butternut squash and sunflowers. I'll be starting seeds and planting cold weather crops (and having a baby!) before I know it! So excited!
Are you planning your garden yet?
Are you growing anything new?
So exciting! The seed catalogs arriving really help kick the winter blues. I've been dreaming, but no solid planning until February! I'm hoping to try some heirloom varieties this year. I say I will every year but haven't, but I really am going to do it this year!
ReplyDeleteI love looking through seed catalogs and finding new things to try!
DeleteI also get a little obsessive over seed catalogs. Must... resist... buying... everything...
ReplyDeleteI'm curious as to why you're breaking the eyes off your potatoes? I always let them grow as much as they want until I plant. I can't see it hurting anything and I think it gives them a good head start.
Good blog - thank you.
I think I read in Little House on the Prairie or some other book that they used to break the eyes off all winter so the potatoes didn't use all of their energy/nutrients growing eyes before they got planted. If I let them grow they'd be bushes by now! Lol I don't know if it's right or not, but it makes sense to me.
DeleteHello, I just dropped by for the first time and noticed that you are using Erin's Gardening Notebook. I am the moderator on the Frugal Living Forum and have started to use this as well this year.
ReplyDeleteDrop by the forum and share how the notebook is working out for you.
God bless.
