Shirtwaist Dress - Scarlett O'Hara Style

I made this shirtwaist dress from a 1989 Simplicity pattern. It looks more like a 50s style to me which I love! It's made out of two pottery barn curtains that I bought for .50! Can you believe it!? I only paid .25 for the pattern so including buttons and thread this dress cost about $3! (Plus a whole lot more in labor costs.) I made View 1 without the elastic waistband because I didn't have enough seam allowance to put it in. I also squared the collar and pockets and cut some length off of the bottom. The pattern was fairly easy with some tricky parts and pretty time consuming, at least for me, but I really like the way it turned out! :)

Can you believe this came from an 80s pattern?

  1. That is so pretty! When my sewing skills improve I want to make some clothes from 1950's patterns as they are so feminine!

  3. Thanks! I get most of my patterns from different thrift stores. One of them in my area has free patterns! :) You can also find vintage ones on Etsy, Ebay, or at flea markets.

  4. Well considering that the 80's style is back. At least the early 80's late 70's this isn't a shocker. But the styles I've been seeing and buying are the plaids and the cowl neck tops and sweaters.

  7. Great job. I bet if you didn't tell anyone, they would think you bought it from the store for many dollars more instead of helping the environment AND your pocketbook. I probably have a 100 or so of old patterns. Many styles are reappearing today. Also, I can see many other things besides the dress you could make from that pattern. You chose a very versatile pattern. EnJOYed your post very much.
