Lessons In Sewing - And A New Top!

I know I've said it before but, sewing and I have a love/hate relationship. I think it stems from the fact that it requires me to be precise, detail oriented, and patient (all of which I am not). In the words of my mother my vision usually exceeds my talent, thanks mom. It's true though I tend to sail through an easy project and then believe that I can do anything! While I know I can do anything if I set my mind to it I tend to get frustrated and give up. Case in point, I bought several dress patterns when they were on sale for .99, attempted two of them in one day and they both ended up in the trash. Frustrating and wasteful. I think I've finally learned my lesson though: I'm not that experienced so I should choose my projects accordingly. Therefore, I bought a tunic blouse pattern marked easy (which means I might be able to complete it with out yelling and screaming).

I chose New Look 6025 and made option A without the belt:
Now on my new path to realizing that I don't know it all I decided to use the measurements on the back of the pattern to pick my size. Well it says I'm a size 14! In real life I'm half that size, but I assumed the pattern makers knew more than me so I proceeded. Once it was cut of course it was HUGE and looked like a hospital gown (not the look I was going for). So I cut it down about 4 sizes and still had to put darts in the back for it to fit. I also put a deep hem in the bottom because it was a little longer than I wanted.

Other than the sizing, this pattern was fairly simple. I didn't even refer to the instructions very much because I knew what to do! (See mom, I know something about sewing after all!) I would definitely make this pattern again. Here's my completed shirt:

What do you think?
Do you get as frustrated with sewing as I do?
If so, what lessons have you learned?

  1. hehehe...O Missy, how VERY much I understand!! I started an Easter dress for Aubrey before she was born...um..the cut-out fabric is still lying on my sewing table...I'm terrified of a few of the steps because I've never done them before and I hate failing at projects (according to Dr. Kevin Leman, this is due to my first-born perfectionist personality). And so...the little dress still sits and waits and if I don't soon pick it up again, she'll be all grown out of it!
Your shirt is lovely! Very impressive...and a little inspirational!

  2. I'm the youngest child so I tend to just let go! Which means I wait until I mess up the whole project to stop! Ha you should go for it! If it doesn't work out as least you will have learned something, right? :)
