Budget Landscaping

Every Spring I get so jealous of people with daffodils because they are one of the first flowers to bloom. And every year I tell myself I need to plant some so I can enjoy them too! Well yesterday I tried to talk some out of Mike's brother, but he said no. He did tell us there were lots growing in the ditch across the street. (Keep in mind that this was on a country road not in the middle of the suburbs.) So we took a shovel and started digging. Now I'm not telling you to go dig flowers out of the ditch (unless you want to). I just thought it was funny. The REAL budget landscaping tip is next, but here are some pictures of our daffodils:
FYI I did actually pay for the hyacinth (purple) flower.

So the day after our ditch digging adventure I found some free bushes on craigslist! And my husband being the understanding man that he is drove me across town, loaded them in his truck, and planted them in the yard! I think they look good and they were FREE people! I just hope they survive the transplant. I didn't plant anything last year because I found out that landscaping is so expensive. Well here's the cheap way to beautify your yard:

What do you think?

  1. We budget landscape too:) Last year, our across-the-street neighbor was ripping out a whole mess of azalea bushes with a truck. We knew the roots system would possibly be damaged beyond repair, but I love azaleas, so my sweet Handsome spent an entire afternoon transplanting 11 free azalea bushes. Unfortunately, they didn't take, but if they had, it would have been awesome! LOL I do have some daffodils a backyard neighbor brought over for me last year that I just posted about on my blog. http://fromsnowflakestohotcakes.blogspot.com/2011/03/gods-green.html (Kept them in a walmart bag in the garage and forgot what they were.) Now that they've bloomed, I have a flower box full of cute little tiny daffodils!" :-)

  2. The shrubs look great!!! I LOVE Daffodils too. Every spring I admire them when I drive by a wild patch on the side of the road. It makes me think of how God has created a "season" for EVERYTHING and those beautiful flowers that pop out of nowhere for a few weeks a year are a amazing reminder of how incredible our God truly is!!!

  4. Don't forget to water the bushes all summer and they'll probably take.

I L.O.V.E. free landscaping. A friend gave me 4 fig starts, ie: sticks off of his fig tree w/a small bud. I planted them and watered them. they made it thru the summer. I transplated them to my "orchard" this winter and they have recently budded out and look great. My favorite flowers are flowers that friends have shared with me out of their own garden.

  5. Anything you can get for free is a bonus as well as a pleasure :-)

Also, I have been known to carry a shovel and large hefty garbage bags with me on country drives for those "ditch digging" transplants: LOL. Of course, I only dig on "free" land - not on private owned property.

  6. This is great! I too am one that always wishes I had planted daffodils the year before when they come up in Spring. One of the sweetest things our church family did for us was when we moved into our house in the country was to give us a surprise "yard and garden" shower. Several of the women of the church gave me cuttings from their gardens--lamb's ear, sedum, gardenia, crepe myrtle, iris, lilies.... they were the most special gifts to me!

  7. Paula - Thanks so much! I'm just gonna keep on watering them. I'm sure they will take. I hope.

Val - I'm glad I'm not alone in digging up flowers from the ditch. Ha.

Megan - I've never heard of a garden shower. That's such a great idea! I should have someone throw one for me! Ha.

  8. Way to go! Sure beats buying expensive plants from the nursery, doesn't it? I've been wanting to go dig up a yucca plant for our front yard... They grow in the ditches here- some of the neighbors might think I'm crazy, but I'm going to try anyway. hehe. Thanks for sharing this with the Homestead Barn Hop!

  9. Those look like Boxwoods, which are very expensive "brand new" and that big! Kudos to you and thanks for sharing how you got them!

Tina- My mom told me they looked like an expensive plant too. I guess we did good! :)
