I got a subscription to Hobby Farms and Hobby Farm Home for my birthday and I got my first issue this weekend! I'm not sure if I've mentioned it on here or not, but I'm very interested in homesteading and becoming more self-sufficient. I have plans to get chickens in the spring and plant a garden. I would also love to put up a clothesline and install a rain barrel. Eventually we will end up living on Mike's family farm so I'm just getting a head start on things. :)
I also got my Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Catalog! If you've never heard of this company they offer the largest selection of heirloom varieties in the United States. Excerpt taken from catalog:
"All of our seed is non-hybrid, non-GMO, non-treated and non-patented. We do not buy seed form Monsanto-owned Seminis. We boycott all gene-altering companies. We are not members of the pro-GMO American Seed Trade Organization! We work with a network of about 50 small farmers, gardeners and seed growers to bring you the best selection of seeds available! Many of our varieties we sell were collected by us on our travels abroad. We offer over 1,300 fine varieties from 70 different countries!"
I've never ordered from them, but based on the paragraph above I highly recommend them! It is so fun to look through the catalog and read about all the different varieties of fruits and vegetables God has created! I've already picked out most of what I want to order for the spring and I'm so excited to grow my first garden! I'll try not to get my hopes up too high because I know gardening is a trial and error process. Is anyone else planning their gardens already?

This is exactly what I'm reading this weekend! I just started getting Hobby Farm Home and I got my seed catalog from Baker Creek a few days ago and I had to page through it just to look at the pictures!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! It's good to know someone else is enjoying good reading too :)
