Intentional About Memorizing Scripture

I think God might be nudging me to memorize scripture. I got an e-mail a few weeks back about a  scripture memory challenge for 2012 and then in my bible study we had a speaker talk about her scripture memory system that really got me excited about starting!

I've attempted to memorize scripture before, but never really stuck to it long term. I could probably recall a handful of verses, but nothing too extensive. I don't like that. I want to have the Word of God hidden and cemented in my heart. I want to be able to draw up scripture when the need arises (which it often does). Also, I want to be able to instill in my children the blessings and discipline that come from life long scripture memory.

"I have hidden your Word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you."
-Psalm 119:11

The system the speaker talked about is fairly simple (yet you have to be dedicated.) Basically you pick one memory verse per week to memorize.

I know we're all busy and it's hard to schedule new disciplines into our days, so why not pick a time that is "open" already? Such as, washing the dishes, doing the laundry, feeding the baby, exercising, or brushing your teeth? Couldn't you find a task that you do daily to begin meditating on scripture? It's so easy to make excuses, but hiding the Word of God in our hearts is so very important!

Every week you add a new verse, but continue to review your old verses daily. (Making a mark for each day you reviewed it.) Then once you've reviewed your verse for 50 days move it to your "weekly" pile and pick a day once a week to review it. Then one you've review it for 50 weeks you add it to your "long term" pile and review it on occasion. Hopefully by this time it's committed to memory for life!! Okay so the system does sound kinda complicated, but if you really stuck with it I think it would work! Anyway, my husband and I are going to start in the new year. Yay!

Also, if you want to join in with other ladies who have committed to memorize a verse a week in 2012 click the button below. What a great resource of support and encouragement!

Do you have a scripture memory system? Do you have any questions about the system we're going to use? I may not have explained it very well, but I didn't want to make it too long and wordy.

  4. My parents felt scripture memorization to be very important (and so do I). As part of our homeschooling we were assigned scriptures to memorize. My Dad normally picked the verses and we would work on them - as a family and individually. When we were little we'd get 'gifts' if we had them memorized correctly. Doing so as a family we learned the entire book of Titus, my brother did the Proverbs and we did many psalms, Philippians 1 etc. We also would write the scriptures on a grease board near the dinning table and would recite them every meal! :)

  5. That's awesome! I plan to implement some sort of system for my children as well. I like the idea of reciting right before or after dinner while we are all together.
