I made homemade apple butter in the crock pot yesterday and it turned out wonderful! I had an abundance of apples in my fridge (and I still have LOTS) because I've been buying them from a local farm every time a new variety is available. In this recipe I used Gala, Jonathan, and Red Delicious. This is a really long process and I would recommend starting it the night before. Here's the recipe:
Crock Pot Apple Butter
Apples (Enough to fill your crock pot.)
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 C. white sugar
3/4 C. brown sugar
1 1/2 T pure vanilla
1. Peel, core, and slice apples.
2. Put apples and vanilla in crock pot and set on low for 8 (or so) hours.
3. After 8 hours, mash apples and add cinnamon and sugar.
It should look like this:
It should look like this:
4. Continue cooking on low for 6 (or so) hours.
5. If you like your apple butter a little lumpy then your done, but I put ours in the blender to make it smooth. It made four pints.
I had it on my bagel this morning and it tasted wonderful!! I might even have to make some more because I gave most of it away.
What do you think? Have you ever used your crock pot to make fruit butter?

Yummy! We love apple butter!
ReplyDeleteI just did this last week! I was going to blog about it but forgot to take pictures. It was my first time making it and it turned out delicious...just like apple butter should be!
ReplyDeleteI too made apple butter last weekend. It was my first time and it turned out great! It's very, very thick - which I love. I used a slightly different recipe that included cloves, I just love the aroma and flavor of cloves.
ReplyDeleteNot only was this my first time making apple butter, it was also my first time canning! I was so happy and surprised when the jar lids sealed properly!
I want to try applesauce next, have you made any?
Hey Sassafras! I did make applesauce last year, but we don't eat it very much so I decided not to make it this year.
ReplyDeletecan I use cooking apples to make this - will the sugar balance out how sour they are? thanks! (found your blog through the WLW blog hop - nice to "meet" you...I will add my blog later :-) )
ReplyDeleteHi Caroline, I'm sure cooking apples would work out just fine. The sourness should cook down and the sugar will balance it. Just make sure you taste it a few hours after adding the sugar and see if it's sweet enough for you. Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the recipe!
ReplyDeleteI am trying my first batch today. So far, so good. It's made the kitchen smell amazing so I'm hoping that means it will turn out great because I LOVE apple butter!
I'm glad your trying it! Mine turned out really delicious!! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOh, yummy! What a great idea to give these during the holidays. I think I may do just that. I love using my crock pot so, this is perfect. Thank you for sharing the recipe and for linking up to Thrifty Thursday.
ReplyDeleteInstead of canning this, can I freeze portions? Looks great, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if it freezes well or not. You could probably look it up on the Ball website.
