No Soda for a Year - The First Month

**In case you didn't know, my husband and I have given up soda and sweet tea for one year. You can read about our reasoning here.

Well, we've made it one month without soda! I'm so excited to be able to sit here and type that! It actually hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be, but I did have a few moments of wondering why I decided to do this in the first place. I tend to jump in head first without thinking things through. My husband however, is way better at sticking to things than I am so he's kept us on course.

The first week or so I felt horrible. I had a slight headache and I was tired allll day long, but I pushed through and now I feel so much better. We've been drinking a lot of water and unsweet tea. Also, we've had a few bottles of sparking apple cider which is actually a wonderful substitute because you still get the sweetness and the fizz which makes me happy. :)

We've also decided to give up most fast food for the year because we were eating it 2-3 times per week for convenience sake. In the past, I would have a rough day or just feel lazy and we'd go grab a burger at Sonic or something, but now that isn't an option so I'm actually cooking every night! It's crazy! :) The only thing I really kinda sorta miss is Chick fil a, but I guess I will survive without it. I tried to "mimic" fast food the other night for dinner and we had baked crispy chicken, oven fries and sparkling cider. I must admit is was really good.

I'm hoping that when this is all said and done I will drink a Dr. Pepper or eat a fast food meal and I won't even like them anymore. It's been so freeing to not even have those things as an option.

Well, that's 1 month down and 11 to go!!

  1. Hello there, when I did weight watchers a good few years back, I cut out a lot, and did find that I could barely even stand looking at the food I used to eat, unfortunately that didn't stop me, but it does happen. Have a blessed day. Good luck, your body will love you for it. Tara.

  2. Good for you! I definitely know that these kind of decisions can be very difficult to stand by sometimes, but the longer you stick with it the easier it will be. I did a similar thing several years ago and now I rarely have soda (maybe once a month). For me it has become a treat that I enjoy every now and then, and I think that is how it should be.

  3. Have you tried Izzy's?? They are sooo good and are natural fruit juices with carbonated water so you get the sweetness you crave from a soda. Plus with each one you drink you get two servings of fruit. Way to go on your progress and good luck with the rest of the year!

    1. I've seen it before, but didn't know that it was fruit juice. Thanks! I'll have to try it!

  4. I'm so impressed! We don't eat out much and soon our budget will not have room for much pop. I love sparkling apple cider and I think that is a great idea for weaning off pop {soda, lol}. I hear ya on missing Chick Fil A though! I plan a few slow cooker meals a week for "easy" nights and about once a week we have a "fast food" meal that includes oven baked fries {grilled burgers and fries or "Irish" nachos - nacho toppings on baked fries}.

  5. Congrats on your one month into healthy eating. For me it has been a baby step thing. One small step at a time. I now mostly only drink water, do not even like soda! Not even sparkling cider. I haven't eaten fast food for years, and when I do I get violently ill. Funny eating out isn't fun any more, even Olive Garden which is my favorite place to eat. :-{ but my hubby and I are healthier for it. Keep up the good work, it does get easier. And your taste buds do change.

  6. That is awesome! We are working on this too. It's true about fast food! You probably won't even want it. Yesterday we were out, and with 4 kids (three that had to eat), we needed to feed them of course and we needed something quick. I couldn't even stomach the idea of McDonald's or something because we have gone so long without it that places like that disgust ms. So we got chik fil a. Not that that is a perfect option either...but I like their different options for kids meals.

What you are doing is pretty awesome! Keep it up:)

  7. I gave up soda about 6 years ago. I got bad headaches at first, but it was worth getting it out of my system. You lose 'bloat' weight, and I felt less full alomst instantly. I will occasionally have an orange soda or a root beer, very rarely, but its caffeine free. When I tried drinking a regular soda after about a year, it was so syrupy and sweet I just couldnt do it. Kudos to you and the hubby!

  8. This is wonderful for your dh and you! I am impressed. I had a coke for lunch and I know I shouldn't have but I have no will power it seems. I want to try this though. I think it is a great idea about the sparkling cider!

  9. I stopped sinking Pepsi in 2002/2003 cold turkey. I felt like I had the flu for 3 days, but it was in June:-). Once I got over that i haven't had one since. And I was drinking a case of Pepsi a week! I just gave away the Pepsi that was in there for a long while. 10 yrs ago that would have been gone! On occasion I will have Ginger Ale or a Sprite for an upset stomach. But that's rare, I used to drink Sprite when I'd go out to eat, now I will get a lemonade.

All I drink now is water! Not flavored, but straight water, best thing for you. Congrats on your efforts to become more healthy!
