Rethinking Make Up

Mike told me the other night that he wished I didn't wear make up all the time. This isn't the first time he's said something like this. I think a lot of men prefer women who are natural. So why do most women feel they can't leave their house unless they have make up on? What's the point?

We've grown up in a society where its almost unheard of for a grown woman to go without make up. A hundred years ago make up or "paint" was considered trashy. So what happened? Its nothing new. Beauty in some fashion has always been sought after. Think of Esther when she was in the harem getting ready to meet the king. She spent months bathing in oils and making herself beautiful. And those women who would never go around wearing that trashy "paint"? Well they went around fainting instead because of their corsets and sought after ten inch waists. So today instead of bathing in oils and wearing corsets, we wear make up. It's all about what our generation tells us is normal I guess. Oh and mass media doesn't help much either.

We're bombarded with numerous products that promise to basically "make us become who we've always wanted to be." They promise miracles, but don't deliver. That's because no product is ever going to fulfill us. We can't find our satisfaction and self worth in lipstick. That has to come from God and from within ourselves.

So why do I still put on make up everyday when the only people I see are Mike and a 14 month old baby? Why? I guess I do it because it makes me feel good. It makes me feel prettier. I don't wear that much just concealer, powder, bronzer, and blush. I wear it mostly to cover up my skin issues and even out my skin tone, but it is worth it? I'm starting to realize that on most days I only put on make up because of social pressure. I'm not saying that make up is a bad thing, but when you begin to depend on it and feel like you need it then maybe its time to look inward. That's what I've been doing and it's proved to be a very worthy endeavor. I'm beginning to embrace my natural beauty. (Yes ladies we all have it!) I don't need to wear make up to feel pretty. God and my husband love me without it and that's all I need to know! I'm not saying I'm going to quit wearing it completely, but I don't think I'm going to be depending on it quite so much.

What about you? Do you wear make up on a daily basis? Why or why not?

  1. Thank you for your comment! I really like this post! I kinda have the opposite problem at the moment! I'm mostly only wearing make up for church or special occasions, and then very rarely at home. I would like to wear make up a bit more at home, but still embrace my natural beauty as well! It's a hard balance to find!!

  2. I don't wear makeup at all. I never really got into it and then I'd wear some here and there, but now I've stopped. I don't wear it for several reasons. I don't have the money, it's expensive. I don't have time in the morning. And the hubby actually prefers it when I don't. All good enough reasons for me!

  3. Great thoughts! I think makeup can look very nice and tasteful and maybe I'll wear some someday, but for now (at 20), I don't wear any makeup. My main reasons are that my fiancé likes how I look without it, and I feel comfortable without it. I don't want to getting into the habit of wearing any because it would just be another expense, and because I don't want to put myself in a situation where I don't look like "myself" unless I have put makeup on. You're so pretty in your picture - I'm sure you look wonderful with or without makeup, and if your husband likes what you do, that's most important! By the way - I like how high your wedding dress is at the top - where did you get it? I just got engaged a week ago and we are planning on a July wedding, so I'm getting right on top of everything ASAP. :)

  4. Hmmm, let's see...I look dead if I don't wear it. LOL...no really. I am very pale and have blonde eyelashes. My husband says I look healthier if I wear makeup. This is what I wear...eye shadow, eye liner, mascara...that's all. I have never wore "base" or whatever that is. So I guess it's just my eyes. I do feel very uncomfortable and insecure without eye makeup...I look dead. ;)

  5. Hi! I found you on the UBP this week and bookmarked you "for future reference." :^) And now I just wanted to let you know that I've decided to follow you - and I look forward to getting to know you. ~ Tina (http://tinahollenbeck.blogspot.com)

  6. I can totally relate to this post, Missy! Stephen also prefers for me to look very natural with hardly any lip color but it is such an adjustment for me!

  7. My husband doesn't mind if I wear mascara or natural color lipgloss, but everything else is out. I used to LOVE getting acrylic nails, but I stopped after our wedding. I now realize how expensive and wasteful it was for me to keep up that "beauty" habit.

  8. I only wear make-up on occasion. I am too lazy most of the time for it! Nathan would rather me not wear any make-up.

  9. I used to be a can't leave the house with out it kinda girl. Now I wear make up sometimes, but I am using it less because of all the chemicals in it. Most days I wear lip gloss and mascara, the mascara is because my eyelashes are blond on the end. I look more awake with it on, and since I found a natural brand I am very happy. Lip gloss cause my lips are dry, I make my own, or use Burts Bee. My husband is a less is more kinda of guy on make up.

  10. I don't wear make-up at home, but I do if I'm going to leave the house. I was plagued with terrible acne as a teen that left me scarred, so I feel more comfortable with a more even skin tone. I keep it as natural and light as possible. Hubby doesn't like me to look over done, but he does like the vintage 1940's look.

Where I live, "permanent makeup" is popular. Women are actually getting makeup tattooed onto their faces!

  11. Hi, new here. I wear makeup to work each day-couldnt go without it. I probably wear it because I was forbidden as a teenager-my mother doesn't believe that women should wear any makeup, so I rebelled. I only wear a lite amount of makeup, it covers up aging skin and the occasional wrinkle!

    Nice meeting you:)

  12. I wrote an interesting article on beauty. It's on page 4 of this Christian Church Newsletter, it may be an interesting read for some:

  13. We're bombarded with numerous products that promise to basically "make us become who we've always wanted to be.Actually they don't deliver. Just selling their products. Its better to use natural products, that are chemical free. also try to use aluminium free Deodorant
