God Given Gender Roles

The Truth that man and woman are different and have different roles and responsibilities in life flies in the face of our feminist culture. God created male and female to be different, but because we are both created in the image of God we are equals. The fact that this is even a question in our culture today shows how far we have strayed from the system that God has so perfectly created.

"So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them."
-Genesis 1:27

Just a few decades ago feminists declared that they were tired of being "suppressed" and demanded to share the responsibilities (or did they call it freedom..) that God gave to a man to provide and lead in the family. Feminists demanded the right to go out into the workplace and prove that they could do just as much as any man could do. While I do believe that women are just as intelligent and capable of doing most of the work that men do I also realize that providing for the family is a burden God gave to men. I was not alive during the feminist movement, however I am feeling the backlash (and stranglehold) of it in our culture. Now because of feminism women are expected to go out and bring home income and if they happen to believe in focusing on their own God given role as helpmeet then they are looked down upon as being lazy or brainwashed.

The truth is that God created a family system that when working properly under the love and headship of Christ benefits all involved. The Husband has the responsibility to lead, provide for, and protect his family. He is suppose to love and serve his wife sacrificially just as Jesus gave himself up as a sacrifice for us. (Ephesians 5:25) When you look at the role of headship in this manner it is such a beautiful picture. Husbands are to take on the lifelong responsibility of taking care of their wives and making sure that they are materially and spiritually provided for. To me this is a beautiful gift that God has given women to be protected and cherished. This can only work when the husband lives under the authority of Christ as a believer otherwise he might take advantage of his position as the leader of the family.

Women were created to be a helper to men. It is the essence of who we are and why we were created. Whether feminists admit it or not this is the absolute Truth spoken plainly in the scriptures:

"Then the Lord God said,
"It is not good that the man
should be alone; I will make
him a helper for for him."
-Genesis 2:18

Women were created in the image of God just as man. Women were given an important role just as man. Man and woman are equals, but they have very different responsibilities given to them by God. Wives are to walk alongside their husbands while influencing and encouraging them to become the men God created them to be. Women are to love and serve their husbands and submit to their headship just as the church is to love and serve Christ and submit to His headship. If this system is played out the way God created it to be then He is glorified. The role God has given woman is to focus on her husband and children. She is to love and nurture them and help them to become the men and women God created them to be. To me there is no higher calling for a woman than to take care of her family and have a vision to influence them for the Glory of God. The only reason a woman would be threatened by this system is if she doesn't also submit to the authority and headship of Christ in her life. Here is the Truth written in Ephesians that the Lord has so clearly laid out regarding wives and husbands:

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body." -Ephesians 5:22-30

I hope and pray that I can fulfill my role as a woman created in the image of God by taking care of my family and being the helper and encourager God created me to be.
